Chapter 4 - [Myah, W. Albert, Brawler, Asou, and Mikoto] A Day at the Arcade Part 1
Even if it's just a leisurely Sunday morning walk, there are very few events that can stop Mikoto from reaching her destination:
Events like meeting her friends and sidetracking to a nearby cafe...
Events like seeing Eri being mistakenly confessed to by Harima...
Events like Hanai trying to hit on Yakumo on the street...
...and events like a new arcade opening just across the street, with all of its brand new game machines sparklingly free of high scores and insane records.
"Well, I have some time to spare." she thought as she dashed to the nearest overpass.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the road not so far from the newly opened arcade, W. Albert was walking slowly on the sidewalk, but fanning himself furiously with his little plastic fan.
"Wah, the weather's so hot..." he whispered to himself as he stopped fanning for a moment. "This is silly. If I walk slowly, I'll expose myself more to the hot weather. If I walk quickly, I'll perspire myself due to the heat. I can cool myself if I fan fast enough , but my arm will get tired. But if I stop fanning, it'll be hot again...Oh wait, is that an arcade? Maybe they have DDR! Or better yet, an aircon."
And so he walked (this time a little bit faster) towards the arcade.
Meanwhile, at around the same time that W.Albert was immersed in his thoughts about the hot weather, a young foreigner named Myah has his hand on his chin and standing in front of the newly opened arcade, thinking of whether to enter or not.
The arcade owner, a short man in his forties, called out to him after some hesitation.
"Hey there kid, welcome to Mimezone! Do you want to try some of the games inside?" he said, looking up at Myah due to his height. "You'll be my first customer!" he added.
Myah considers the thought for a moment. "So, do I get a discount?"
"Sorry, but I can't do that...but we have the newest DDR." answered the man with an embarassed smile.
Myah scratched his head at the owner's weird answer but nevertheless decided to give in. "Well, I guess I have time to spare..." he said as the owner escorted him to the counter.
At around that time, Brawler happened to turn around the street corner and saw the arcade in its full, newly opened glory. "Now here's something new." he thought as he went inside and lined up at the counter behind Myah, his eyes glinting beneath his cap.
Myah, after getting a few tokens proceeded to the new DDR machine somewhere at the back of the arcade and started to play some simple, warm-up songs.
Brawler on the other hand, bought significantly more tokens than Myah and browsed at the fighting games situated near the entrance. "Hmm...such a good collection." he muttered. "Taken 5, Sold Caliber 3, Fed or Alive..." His eyes wandered for a while before finally sitting on the Taken 5 machine, picked his favorite character (Fryan Bury), and started playing.
It was at this time that Albert arrived at the arcade. Seeing the place empty except for Brawler, he decided to watch him play while cooling off. ("We have aircon." he remembered the owner said to him as he entered) Despite the lack of people playing, the place is quite noisy due to all the games running their respective demos. But Albert doesn't seem to mind that.
As he stood there watching, the glass door opened behind him and in comes Mikoto, a bit tired from hurrying to the arcade. She immediately went to the counter, slightly surprising the owner.
"My, you seemed all hyped up." he said to her as he handed out the tokens.
Mikoto smiled in reply and immediately went to the Kick-o-rama machine somewhere behind the arcade...
Meanwhile Myah was merrily chaining combos on the DDR machine when a large THUMP! behind him caused him to misstep and break his 200-ish combo. "What the...it sounded like somebody did a strong kick on a large cushion." he thought. Seconds later he heard the machine behind him making some alarming, siren sounds. He finished the last song he was playing and turned around just in time to see Mikoto putting her name in the machine.
"M-i-k-o-t-o. There, that should do it." Mikoto spoke to herself as she pressed 'enter'. Her name shone brightly on the game screen as the top scorer...which kinda made sense since she's the first person to play it.
"Now what to do...maybe I'll try racing." she thought as she left the Kick-o-rama machine.
Myah, who was a bit shocked at the fact that a girl can kick that hard, decided to try the Kick-o-rama machine for himself.
"Maybe it's not that hard. I think the machine gives high scores depending on your...Oh, there's an option here where the machine adjusts its settings and scoring system depending on your gender and age bracket." he thought as he selected "male" and "teen" from the options. The kicking cushion was then released, and upon the go signal, Myah kicked it with full force. It made a loud THUMP! but somewhat less louder than Mikoto's.
"Well, that should set a record." Myah thought, as he inputted his name in the machine and pressed 'enter'. The screen flashed for a moment and the top scorers were shown:
Kick-o-rama Top Scorers: Male Division - Teen
1. Mikoto - 159500
2. Myah - 8200
3. -no entry-
4. -no entry-
5. -no entry-
Myah left the Kick-o-rama machine looking depressed.
Meanwhile in one of the racing games...
"Oh, I forgot to change my gender at the options back there...Oh well." thought Mikoto as she made a powerslide (or drift) through a sharp turn.
